A "ONCE UPON A TIME" THEMED PARTY, POST 1: GAMES & PRIZES

Prepare yourself for another post in our Crafty Chaos series....

Don’t you just love Once Upon a Time? Well, so do we—it is perhaps our very favorite TV show at the moment! We love it so much, in fact, that we decided to make it the theme of our recently-turned-fifteen-years-old sister’s surprise birthday party! It was lots of fun, but it definitely was not easy because most of the fairytale party ideas we found online were fit for five-year-old girls, not teenagers. After a lot of time spent on IMDB and Pinterest, brainstorming with some family members, and browsing the Dollar Tree, we finally came up with some great ideas for the party, and our sister and her guests really seemed to LOVE it! We decided to start off our new blog with a series of posts on this party, and finally get some not-so-kiddish ideas out there for non-five-year-old-girls who want a fairytale inspired party! So, let’s kick off this four-post-long series by taking a look at the games we played and the prizes we gave away at our Once Upon a Time themed party! :)

**Links to printables are at the end of this post.

The first game we played was Trivia Bingo! Basically, we made a bunch of trivia cards that asked questions about the Once Upon a Time show, traditional Grimm fairytales, and the Disney versions. The answers to the questions were on the guests’ bingo cards that we made, so they just put one of their magic beans (jelly beans) on the answer and whoever got a Bingo got a prize from the prize basket!

We also played Poisoned Apples to Apples. We used your basic Apples to Apples game and wrote in fairytale characters and objects (like Snow White, glass slipper, etc.) on the “Write your own” cards. Whenever someone either won a round or laid down any fairytale card, they got a prize from the prize basket.

We weren’t sure how long everything at the party would take, so we had a back-up game of charades planned. We did not end up needing the back-up game, but maybe you will want to play this one at your own Once Upon a Time party! Just write down a bunch of fairytale characters and items on little pieces of paper, throw them in a basket, and have a guest pick a paper out of a basket and act it out! The other players can guess who/what the person is pretending to be, and you can use a timer if you want. (I just thought I would describe exactly how to play charades, because I’m sure none of you have ever played this INCREDIBLY original game before….)

Now, let’s get to the fun part: the prizes! We gave away a total of 45 prizes, without spending much. Trust me; we got BIG BANG for our buck! Most of the prizes were from the Dollar Tree, and a lot of them came in packs, so we broke up the packs into individual prizes so we could give more. So it was an inexpensive, fun way to give the girls a lot to take home with them! Some of the prizes were a bit dorky, I must admit, but some were awesome! We gave away candy, homemade cookies, body sprays, candles, headbands, and more! Each prize came with a “fairytale tag” attached—just a little something to connect the prize to the theme of the party. We wrapped everything up in brightly colored wrapping paper (also from the Dollar Tree). Take a look at the prizes and tags below!

Well, that wraps up our first post! We hope this gives you some fun ideas that you can incorporate into your very own Once Upon a Time themed or fairytale inspired party—or maybe just something for a fun and simple family night! If you would like to suggest any fun game or prize ideas for a fairytale party, then please leave us a comment. Thank you so much for reading, and remember we still have three more posts to come all about this party! Check in next week for our next post, which will cover the fun and easy DIY crafts/activities we did at the party! :)

  3. I liked reading through this post. I am also in need of the theme ideas for my husband’s 27th birthday. I want to throw a fun bash for him at some outdoor San Francisco venues but I am not able to find any good theme. I wonder if you could help regarding it.
